Bullying : Thoughts

So recently my baby sister’s been coming home and telling me about she’s been getting bullied at school by the ‘big popular girls’ and that she doesn’t want to go to school because of her. It’s really made me think, because (maybe it’s just me but) there really isn’t such terrible bullies in our year. I mean, no one is so mean to anyone else that it make them want to stop coming to school. Is the new generation just meaner? Has bullying got worse? Or are the kids just more insecure nowadays? Maybe its a mix of all of these, I wouldn’t know. But I just felt like I needed to write about this to spread the message.

I understand that all children cannot have the same ‘social status’. Thats literally impossible. I also understand that as kids grow, they experience many changes and their social interactions change as well. But isn’t it sad that one social group feels the need to undermine another? And at such young ages too? Children are not originally born with the need to put-down others. They must be learning it from somwhere. Whether its TV, the internet or just imitating an older brother or sister, the source of child bullying has to start from outside, in a childs’ environment. Why else would a child do something so outside of the characteristic youth innocence?

Bullying is not just pushing kids around on the playground anymore. Its much bigger than that, and there are many more forms to them than before. Words can hurt, we all know this. Its happened to us and to those around us. We know how it feels. Why would we want anyone else to feel like that? Stopping bullying is not easy – it is a widespread phenomenon and needs to be cut at the bud. Succumbing to what bullies say is not the way to stop them – trying to lose weight, becoming the picture perfect barbie doll and, in general, changing everything about yourself to avoid bullying just means that the bullies win. Saying no to bullying and standing up to the people you fear, showing them that its not ‘cool’ to make other people feel hurt are things we can do to make a difference. Easier said than done, I suppose, but either way, doing this a necessary step towards ending an unnecessary evil.

How many kids have to die before people realise that bullying is bad?
