Things You Need To Do Before You Die : Part 1

Most people, I’m sure, already have a bucket list. Whether its weird, detailed, long, wacky or daring, everyone has basically compiled a list of things they want to do, people they want to see, or places they want to go before they kick that proverbial bucket.

As I sat making my own the other day, I thought, why not make the bucket list official? That way, I’ll be forced to accomplish at least half of the things on it (damn you peer pressure!) So, in case you need a little inspiration to kick off or expand yours, here are a few things on my bucket list.

1. Visit all the continents (well, maybe except maybe Antarctica)

It’s probably no secret at this point that I absolutely LOVE to travel. Seeing new places, doing new things and learning of new cultures and languages are just some things that provide me with that extra buzz to life. So of COURSE this had to the first thing on the list. So far, I’ve visited every continent except North and South America. *sigh*

2. Learn to Skateboard

I don’t know, it’s just a skill I’ve always admired in other people, and, I mean, how bad could I suck right? *trips on straight floor*

3. Be on TV

I mean, I’ve already been on the news before but being on TV is so much more real somehow, you know?

4. Buy my dad a car

I want to do this for Fathers’ Day or something (when I’m not broke, aka when I get a job). It’s just something I’ve always dreamed of doing.

5. Learn how to ride a horse

I mean I’ve ridden one at a carnival before but that was when the trainer was LITERALLY holding the reins and basically walked the horse around the field once. That doesn’t count. I want to learn to ride for real.

6. Plant 17 Trees

I don’t know why it’s 17 but it just is. If you know me at all, you know that I basically have a black thumb, meaning I can’t grow shit. Not even weeds. So this is something I need to accomplish.

7. Learn how to dance

I’m not even exaggerating, I actually suck at dancing. I just can’t dance. I mean I am the prestigious inventor of the chicken dance (thank you, thank you) but apart from that, niet.

8. Be the boss

Maybe it’s just me, but our whole lives as teenagers we’ve been forced and pushed around. Whether it’s by our teachers, parents or peers. Wanting to be the boss is only natural. You can see where I’m going with this.

9. Write a novel

I just, I want to, I never seem to have the time. But I will. One day.

10. Go clubbing every night for a week

Considering I’ve never even been to a club once, this promises to be interesting.

11. Learn to play the drums

OK, I’m just being ambitious here (because I already know how to play the guitar, piano and clarinet) but I want to learn how to play the drums. I just want to.

12. Teach someone something useful

I don’t know, it’s probably not a calling or anything, I just want to teach a person in need something they find useful. I dunno.

That’s all for now y’all.

5 Reasons Why I Love Anime

Right off the bat, I want to set one thing straight. If you’re one of those people who thinks that ‘anime’ is just another word for ‘cartoons’ or thinks that anime are ‘childish’, then this is not the post for you. Stop reading right now, and click away to something else, because this post is going to be (yet another) fangirl session for me.

#sorrynotsorry

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

1. Japanese Culture

Maybe it’s just me, but nothing has ever quite fascinated me as much, or captured me quite as quickly and completely as the Japanese culture has. It’s language and history captivate me to be honest, so what’s not to love about anime? I’ve learnt quite a bit of Japanese just from watching the oodles of anime that I do, and I get so excited by the prospect of visiting the Land of The Rising Sun (I’m going there next summer) that I can barely sit still as I think about it.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

2. The Characters

Whether it’s because they’re adorable with their big eyes and endearing hairdos or because of how relate-able some of the them (their personalities, feelings and situations) are, I absolutely and unconditionally LOVE anime characters. There are so many of them I get introduced to in each new anime I watch and they’re like my (HUGE) second family.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

3. The presentation

I don’t know how the Japanese producers seem to so seamlessly pull this off, but the world of anime is so real and at the same time so not. Let me explain. The way that the most absurd and unrealistic anime (like Naruto, Sword Art Online, One Piece, Bakugon, Pokemon) where things like that would be totally impossible in the real world are presented so that you feel that you’re the unrealistic intruder in their very real world is just mind-blowing. When I watch anime, I feel so entranced in their little worlds, realistic or otherwise. The ‘real world’ fails to exist. Its that good.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

4. The Otaku World

Once you become a fan of anime, you become part of a very elite group of amazingly creative and smart people. Most of these anime fans/otakus are such great people and they’re so great to have fangirling sessions and talks with. Some of the fan art my otaku friends from across the world create are just breathtaking. Like seriously, the Otaku world is an alternate reality I could live in forever with no regrets.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

5. The Unending Variety

The great thing you find while hunting for anime is that there is no dearth of options. I mean seriously. Each story line, each plot is so different from its predecessor that you couldn’t possibly be bored. From comedy, romance, adventure, sports and mystery to slice-of-life, shojo, school, shonen, action, josei and parody – you have a plethora of options from which to choose. Theres probably literally an anime for every mood.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

And it doesn’t just end there. There’s manga, cosplay and chibi too!

So if you’re an otaku reading this, please tell me what you think are some of the reasons you think I missed. Oh and don’t forget to send me some love!

How To Get Fit This Summer

“I wanna look fit this summer.”

We’ve heard it all before – from our friends, family and even ourselves, but somehow we never seem to get around to it. It’s hard to motivate yourself to get off the couch, switch off your laptop and start working out. Keeping fit and looking and feeling healthy and strong are not easy and it’s a long road. But you’ve got to get started. For your sake. Teenagers nowadays are unhealthier than ever with obesity rates sky-rocketing.

Studies say that you need to get at least an hour of exercise in your daily schedule. That may seem like a lot, but you don’t have to do mundane exercises. You could do sports or activities you enjoy (like dance!) for an hour to keep fit.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

1. Create a Work-out Playlist

Exercising can be stressful and even more so when you have nothing to distract yourself with. Fast-paced music (urban, dubstep, pop, etc) are great for work-outs because they distract you from what you’re doing. So don’t forget to create a playlist that makes you want to move!

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

2. Do what you love

You don’t have to go to the gym if you don’t feel like it. Do an activity you enjoy. Whether that’s football, dancing, swimming, basketball or track, do what you love so that exercise won’t feel like a burden. Rather, you’ll have fun with it!

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

3. Bring your friends along

Everything seems that much more fun when you have friends to keep you company. Get some like-minded friends to work out with. Not only will your competitive spirit make you want to do as good (if not better) as them but you’ll also have a great time while you’re at it!

P.S. Investing in cute (non-expensive!) work-out clothes are also a great motivation!

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

4. Burn baby burn

Get 60 minutes of cardio most days of the week – something that increases your heart rate and breathing. Don’t be afraid to break a sweat (or a nail)! Eating healthy and clean (no junk food, no soda!) as well as exercising are the killer combo that will have you looking fabulous in no time. Drinking loads of water is also a must not only to digest all your food and fend off acne but also to avoid dehydration during an intense work-out.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

5. Strength Training

Building your bones is also super important. You don’t want to be fighting of osteoporosis when you’re older. For this, you’re going to have to pump some iron. At least two times a week, you need to lift weight that pushes you to your limits on the last couple of reps.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

6. Crunch Time!

It’s not unheard of to want a flat stomach. In fact, most of us watch Kaley Cuoco in jealousy wishing we looked as fit as her (is that just me? I dunno). Bicycle crunches, leg lifts, planks, crunches and side twists are great ways to work out your abdominal area. Aim for 10 to 20 reps for 4 to 5 sets.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

Most of all, you should just have fun with whatever you’re doing. Also, remember that loving yourself and your body and accepting it is very crucial. You aren’t exercising because you hate your body. You’re doing it to feel better.

Remember not to starve yourself in order to lose weight because the objective is not a thigh gap but to be fit. That is in no way the same thing as being skinny, and to be honest, girls with thigh gaps and skeleton-and-skin look sort of scary and ugly, if you ask me. Remember to stay healthy and ask for help and suggestions from your doctor and parents before you start!

Counting Stars : The Meaning Behind the Music

Almost everyone has heard this amazing hit by one of my all-time favourite bands, ‘OneRepublic‘, from their Native Album released last year. The song has taken the world for a spin – it topped charts in several countries and became one of the band’s most famous singles.

Even though the song was mind-blowing and catchy, the meaning behind the music is what caught me most about this song. It’s not a random mesh of words or just another song about partying and drinking like most pop songs nowadays are. It was pretty deep and I think Ryan Tedder (lead singer) did a really good job of it.

Everybody knows it’s easy finding a glamorous dream or passion you wanna follow, but it’s hard to achieve it. The road to your goal is filled with obstacles, not to mention a tonne of hard work and exhaustion. As such, people want distractions from all of it and tend to get easily side-tracked. This song was all about how addictions can get the better of you and how these very ‘distractions’ can make your success impossible – how they can sink you without a trace into the deep dark waters of broken dreams from which there is no return.

Some say the song is about a drug-addict and his struggle to give up the addiction for his loved one and his ultimate failure to do so, leading to his loved one leaving him. Others say it is about a man’s wish to be able to provide for his loved one in a time of financial crisis. Either way, he seems to be unsuccessful as the thought of his failure keeps him awake at night and makes him loose sleep.

Basically, the song is about the hopeless want of a better life even though all personal attempts have been in vain. This song is a beauty and I truly loved listening to it. Make sure to buy OneRepublic’s album Native if you haven’t already!

Obsession of the Week : Memory Palaces

So here’s where my geeky side comes out. Oops. Sorry I’m not sorry. If you don’t like it, turn away. Recently, I’ve started going through noticeable phases in my obsessions. They don’t always last very long, but last week it was Rubik’s Cubes and how to solve them (yes, I did it, in case you’re wondering. I can solve any 3×3 cube in under 30 mins now. That’s kind of slow compared to many, but I just gave myself a week, so I can’t really expect much) and this week it’s Memory Palaces. In case you’re wondering, this is just a trick that can drastically improve your memory.

fangirl

Of course, I got this idea from Sherlock (the Season 3 finale episode goes into somewhat of detail about it) and I just had to see what it was all about. And then I became obsessed. As usual. (It’s never moderation with me, it’s always I’m absolutely infatuated or I really couldn’t care less *sighs dramatically*)

dogs

So anyway, being the weirdo I am, I decided to share with the world the exact extent of my geekiness and tell you all about Memory Palaces (and how to make one, if you’re interested – so that we can go be psychos together, doesn’t that sound like fun?)

First of all, the thing I started off with was this video of Joshua Foer on TED. In case you don’t have time to go through the whole video, let me try and condense it for you as fast and simply as possible. Basically, the idea of a memory ‘palace’ has been around for thousands of years – the Greeks used it to remember long speeches – entire books, even! Back then, they didn’t have smartphones and, as such, they needed to remember things without aids.

So basically how this works is that you have to choose a place in your mind that you’re very familiar with – like your home or school or office or whatever. Any place that you know like the back of your hand. A place that you’re intimately familiar with – the sounds, smells and look of that place should be firmly embedded effortlessly in your mind.

dogs

Say, for example you take your own house. Plan out an exact route you’re going to take around your home. Lets say you start with your door and step into your foyer or hallway or whatever. Your shoe rack follows, then the kitchen, the living room, the master bedroom, the basement, your room, and so on. Map out the exact route you’re going to be mentally taking and firmly plant it in your head. Try not to deviate much.

Then take a list of things you want to remember – like a grocery list and try to place these things in your memory palace. Let’s say, for example, you need to remember to get some carrots, cottage cheese and a new screwdriver (I don’t know, Im just being random here). Now instead of just placing these things in your memory palace, you need to make them memorable – so that they’ll stick in your head.

dogs

For instance, you can imagine two giant carrots, dressed in tutus playing the trumpet and opening your doors for you with your neighbours pointing and laughing. Now that’s hard to forget. Next, imagine as soon as you get in, you smell a rotten stinking stench of cheese way past it’s expiry date and when you look on your coffee table, you see Miley Cyrus licking a hammer. You can probably see where I’m going with this – the more whacky and crazy – the more likely you are to remember it.

dogs

And that’s basically how it goes. The more you practise the better you get at it. You can put tonnes of information in your palace and in fact, you can have several palaces. There’s this Tumblr post I found that was really helpful that you could check out by clicking here. Hope you guys loved testing this out as much as I did!

Stay beautiful!

Music This Week : Tonight Alive

So recently, my twin sister made me listen to this song ‘Lonely Girl’ by Tonight Alive. I’d never heard of either the song or that band, and I pretty much assumed it was going to be like all her other favourite songs (she has a weird taste in music) and braced myself.

And…

AND???

I didn’t hate it. I was so surprised when I didn’t only NOT hate it but actually found myself enjoying it. There’s a lot of loud singing, sure, but the music and lyrics made me want to dance (of course I didnt because I’d started out telling my sister that I was going to hate it and when I didnt, I didnt want to see that smug look on her face. You’d get it if you had a twin. Or a sibling, in general).

259313_10150226957615812_505908_o

Needless to say, as soon as she’d left I proceeded to excessively stalk the band and find out everything there was to know about them (duh.) Here’s what I could deduce – they’re an Australian band of five formed in 2008. Most of their music is punk or pop, I suppose. They’ve worked with All Time Low (love them!), Radio Drive By, Simple Plan (obssessed with them), We are in the Crowd and many others. Their self-funded album All Shapes and Diguises released about 3 years ago, sold 1000s of copies in Australia and Japan.

Two years ago, the band travelled to LA and recorded their debut album What Are You Scared Of?

Anyway, they’re definitely on the rise and they have an amazing voice (oh and heads up, their drummer and lead guitarist are gorgeous; you’re welcome). Their lead vocalist is Jenna McDoughall and she has a very strong, dominating and steady voice I really love.

Fresh Faces : The Vamps

The Vamps

The Vamps

OK, So they aren’t exactly ‘Fresh Faces’ anymore but I think I owe them this one after their first single ‘Can We Dance’ released in August through Mercury Records. Yes, I’m talking about the British hotties The Vamps. I think I first heard of them a month or 2 ago when Taylor Swift’s ’22’ was out and I heard their cover of it and the first thing I thought of was “Wow, they’re really good; almost better than the original song” (after thinking that Bradley Simpson, the lead vocalist was cute, at least).

This song topped the pre-order charts on iTunes, even beating Miley Cyrus for number one position and its video received 1 million views within the first two weeks. Its an amazing song and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you absolutely have to, or you’re a tosser.

Have an amazing week!

Love,

Deliya x 🙂

Music This Week : Miley Cyrus

So everyone knows about Miley’s big VMA turnout. When I watched the video myself, I was quite shocked. But then hey, I guess she has the right to go a little bit nuts (not that she had to show it at the VMAs but…) what with her messed up relationship with Hollywood hottie Liam Hemsworth.

Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus

Getting to her music, who’s heard her new single ‘Wrecking Ball’? It was released August end, I believe. Was it just me, or was the song directed at Liam? Anyway, relationships aside, this song has been stuck in my head all week! Those who haven’t heard it, you have absolutely NO IDEA what you’re missing out on! I swear, the song is addictive. I love the way that this song reminds me of Miley’s earlier music. Not that her music now isn’t good, but its a bit inappropriate for the young people that listen to her. I’ve given the YouTube link for it below so be sure to check it out, its absolutely amazing! Also, you can pre-order her album ‘Bangerz’ on iTunes.

Love you loads,

Deliya x 🙂
