Obsession of the Week : Memory Palaces

So here’s where my geeky side comes out. Oops. Sorry I’m not sorry. If you don’t like it, turn away. Recently, I’ve started going through noticeable phases in my obsessions. They don’t always last very long, but last week it was Rubik’s Cubes and how to solve them (yes, I did it, in case you’re wondering. I can solve any 3×3 cube in under 30 mins now. That’s kind of slow compared to many, but I just gave myself a week, so I can’t really expect much) and this week it’s Memory Palaces. In case you’re wondering, this is just a trick that can drastically improve your memory.

Of course, I got this idea from Sherlock (the Season 3 finale episode goes into somewhat of detail about it) and I just had to see what it was all about. And then I became obsessed. As usual. (It’s never moderation with me, it’s always I’m absolutely infatuated or I really couldn’t care less *sighs dramatically*)

So anyway, being the weirdo I am, I decided to share with the world the exact extent of my geekiness and tell you all about Memory Palaces (and how to make one, if you’re interested – so that we can go be psychos together, doesn’t that sound like fun?)

First of all, the thing I started off with was this video of Joshua Foer on TED. In case you don’t have time to go through the whole video, let me try and condense it for you as fast and simply as possible. Basically, the idea of a memory ‘palace’ has been around for thousands of years – the Greeks used it to remember long speeches – entire books, even! Back then, they didn’t have smartphones and, as such, they needed to remember things without aids.

So basically how this works is that you have to choose a place in your mind that you’re very familiar with – like your home or school or office or whatever. Any place that you know like the back of your hand. A place that you’re intimately familiar with – the sounds, smells and look of that place should be firmly embedded effortlessly in your mind.

Say, for example you take your own house. Plan out an exact route you’re going to take around your home. Lets say you start with your door and step into your foyer or hallway or whatever. Your shoe rack follows, then the kitchen, the living room, the master bedroom, the basement, your room, and so on. Map out the exact route you’re going to be mentally taking and firmly plant it in your head. Try not to deviate much.

Then take a list of things you want to remember – like a grocery list and try to place these things in your memory palace. Let’s say, for example, you need to remember to get some carrots, cottage cheese and a new screwdriver (I don’t know, Im just being random here). Now instead of just placing these things in your memory palace, you need to make them memorable – so that they’ll stick in your head.

dogs

For instance, you can imagine two giant carrots, dressed in tutus playing the trumpet and opening your doors for you with your neighbours pointing and laughing. Now that’s hard to forget. Next, imagine as soon as you get in, you smell a rotten stinking stench of cheese way past it’s expiry date and when you look on your coffee table, you see Miley Cyrus licking a hammer. You can probably see where I’m going with this – the more whacky and crazy – the more likely you are to remember it.

dogs

And that’s basically how it goes. The more you practise the better you get at it. You can put tonnes of information in your palace and in fact, you can have several palaces. There’s this Tumblr post I found that was really helpful that you could check out by clicking here. Hope you guys loved testing this out as much as I did!

You Live and You Learn : Part 1

As you grow up and pass life by, you learn a lot from your experiences (and others’!) that help you not to make the same mistakes in the future. It hurts, but everything – the good, bad and the ugly – all teach you things that are essential for your life experience.

Being a 17 year old nowadays teaches you possibly more than one would imagine at first glance (without standing in our shoes) but we’re still so young with so much to learn. Mistakes shape who we are and here is what I’ve lived and learnt these past years.

The Words We Don’t Say…

Nothing haunts us quite as much as the words we don’t say. Some of you reading this will immediately be able to relate to what I’m saying (just as I can). Whether its a love you’ve buried in your heart for way too long, or a hush-hush bad thing you’ve done or seen someone else do and just can’t tell anyone for some reason or the other, you’ll know what I mean. I mean, truly, has anything occupied your thoughts or captured your mind quite as much as the things you’ve never said have?

And all for what? Something no one seems to be as bothered about as you do? I, myself, have been burdened with a million little secrets before, but the most daunting one was a boy I liked a year older than me. I’d loved him for 4 years and always held it in my heart. So many nights, I’d stay up late thinking about him and be worrying about what he thought of me. So many hours I’d waste getting ready if there was even the slightest doubt I was going to be seeing him. My heart ached terribly with the burden of the secret and….all for nothing. The day I finally told him I liked him, it turned out, he’d liked me for 2 years and he’d just been too nervous to ask me out. We’ve been going out for about a year now but that’s not the point. The things we hide from people, from ourselves, are the things that claw at our hearts and minds and end up hurting us the most.

I mean, if not to take risks and live to the fullest, what else do you plan to do with this wild and beautiful life of yours? Life is the most amazing and precious gift of all. Self induced hurt pricks no one but you, so why do it to yourself? Enjoying the little things, being open and free, loving and being loved for who you are is what life’s all about. The words we didnt say when the moment for them arose and the things we couldn’t voice because we were to afraid of the result, are the words that will revolve in your mind for the rest of your life and leave you no peace.

Whats the worse that could happen? People would laugh at you? So what? You’ll be the joke of the day. Tomorrow, they’ll find someone else to laugh at and you’ll be long forgotten. Its probably only you that thinks the secret’s such a big deal. So go ahead, risk it all and let it all out. You might end up regretting it, but in the end, it is the words that we never said more than the words we did that you remember all your life long.

Stay beautiful!

I hope life isn’t just one big joke, because I don’t get it

I hope life isn’t just one big joke, because I don’t get it.

Recently one of my favourite uncles was in a near-fatal situation and those hours on those uncomfortable hospital chairs really got me thinking. At first, I went all numb like I did when I got hit full-on on my face with a badminton racket. Everyone around me was crying and sobbing but I coudn’t really feel anything except a dull sting on my head like an ant bite, sort of (later that required 3 stitches, but thats not the point).

After a couple of minutes in those dreaded chairs, as the reality of losing someone dear to me truly began to sink in, and every minute seemed to crawl into infinity, I began to bawl and later ask myself what would really happen to or family without Uncle Dan. I’ve never really been a religious person, but just then, the only person who I could seem to turn to was the dude up there. As I thought about how, all too quickly, all the happy times with my uncle could just be snatched away in a second, I hoped and prayed that he would be able to fight it.

I don’t want to sound too depressing so I’ll cut this short. My uncle’s OK now, but these sort of things really get you thinking about what you would do if the same thing happened to, say, your mum or dad tomorrow? What would you do, where would you run, where would you hide? Its like the permanant goodbye. No second chances. And all you can think of is the last thing you said to them, and whether you remembered to tell them ‘I love you’. All I want to say is (and I know this one’s been done to death but) enjoy and treasure every single moment with the ones you love (no matter how annoying that li’l sis of yours is). You have no idea how much you’ll miss her when she’s gone. Take it from me.
